Nook 1.0 Quick Search, menu bar and a Minimal look

The Finder alternative you’ve been looking for.

Finder shows you a list of filenames. Nook shows you your stuff: big, clear thumbnails for everything, a search that understands plain English, and a quick way to clear out what you don’t need.

Built for the way you actually lose files

Five things Finder can’t do.

Each one is a shortcut away.

🔎

Plain-English search ⌘F

Understands type, date, size, folder and where a file came from. Matches names and the text inside images.

📝

Text in images ⇧⌘C

Nook reads your screenshots on-device with Apple’s Vision. Search that Wi-Fi password, or copy the text from several images at once.

⬇️

Downloaded From ⇧⌘J

Every download grouped by source: Gmail, Google Drive, ChatGPT, Slack, WhatsApp, GitHub or any website.

🪞

Duplicates ⇧⌘D

Identical files by SHA-256 fingerprint, plus look-alike photos (bursts, edits, HEIC/JPEG pairs). Nook picks the copy to keep.

✨

Clean Up ⇧⌘K

Cards for old installers, forgotten downloads, old screenshots, big old videos and apps you don’t use any more.

⚡️

Quick Search ⇧⌘Space

A Spotlight-style panel from any app. ↩ opens, ⌘↩ shows in Nook, ⌥↩ shows in Finder.

🎨

Two looks ⌃⌘T

Colourful and friendly, or quiet black, white and grey. Switch any time from the toolbar.

📥

Menu bar downloads

Your ten newest downloads with thumbnails, one click away. Drag one straight into Mail, Slack or Figma.

🎵

Quick Look, Inspector & music

Real Quick Look with Space, an Inspector with camera and download details, and songs that play right in the toolbar.

Finder, or Nook?

Keep using both.

Nook shows the same files, and “Show in Finder” is always one click away.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Does Nook replace Finder?

No, it sits next to it. Nook shows the same files in a friendlier way, and “Show in Finder” is always one click away.

Do my files get uploaded anywhere?

Never. Indexing, text recognition and duplicate detection happen on your Mac. The only network request is a small update check.

Will it delete my files?

Nothing is deleted outright. Clean Up and Duplicates move files to the Trash, so you can always put them back. iCloud-only files are skipped, so nothing gets downloaded behind your back.

Why does it ask for access to Desktop, Documents and Downloads?

macOS asks before any app can read those folders. Nook needs them to show your files. Click Allow once for each.

macOS says it can’t verify the developer. Is that safe?

Nook is distributed directly from this website instead of the App Store, so macOS asks you to confirm the first time. Here’s how to open it — it takes a few seconds.

Which macOS versions are supported?

macOS 14 Sonoma and later, on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

Your Mac’s files, finally beautiful.

Give your files a home that’s nice to look at and easy to search.
